For Democrats, there's no such thing as an off-season
What you chip in before this critical fundraising deadline could determine whether we win or lose in 2014 and 2016.
If we want to keep winning we have to keep working.
Buono, 59, was born in Newark, the youngest of three sisters. She grew up in a working class neighborhood of Nutley, where her father – an Italian immigrant – worked as a butcher, and her mother served as an office worker and substitute teacher. When Buono was 19, her father passed away suddenly.
Buono worked her way through Montclair State College and Rutgers Law School. She began her career as a judicial law clerk and public defender for the New Jersey Department of the State Public Advocate. After a stint in the private sector, Buono was elected in 1992 to the Metuchen Borough Council. She also served as Metuchen Police Commissioner.
Buono served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1994-2001, and has served in the State Senate since 2002.
Buono is married to Dr. Martin Gizzi. They live in Metuchen, where together they have six children.
