Just two weeks after Arizona Governor Jan Brewer struck down the horrendous “License to Discriminate” bill, Senator Gallardo came out as gay.

brightcove.createExperiences(); Now comes the latest from the Sue-Us-It-Ainât-Our-Money Republican-controlled Arizona legislature. The state Senate has passed SB 1062, which simply put would allow business owners to discriminate against gays â and others â under the guise of exercising their religious beliefs. Critics of the legislation call it a âlicense to discriminate.â Thatâs understating it. Imagine the potential abuse when anyone in a business can refuse to accommodate a potential customer because doing so somehow infringes on his faith. Only in Arizona would lawmakers pass such an ungodly law in the name of religious freedom. The House has a companion bill HB 2153. You can register your feelings about it by contacting lawmakers. (Here’s how.) Should the law get through the House and then be signed by the governor there will be a lawsuit. And somewhere along the way a judge, hopefully, will determine that someoneâs proclaimed religious beliefs do not allow him to disregard someone elseâs guaranteed civil rights. But it will cost us. It ALWAYS costs us. Not just in reputation. For being the state that passes the crazy laws. But in actual taxpayer dollars. Senate Democratic Leader Anna Tovar released a statement after the Senate vote that reads in part, âWith the express consent of Republicans in this Legislature, many Arizonans will find themselves … separate and unequal under this law because of their sexual orientation. This bill may also open the door to discriminate based on race, familial status, religion, sex, national origin, age or disabilityâ¦While our state continues to recover from the public relations nightmare of SB 1070, the Republican supporters of this bill are willing to elicit the inevitable backlash and boycotts that will result from its passage.â And for what? So that zealots in the Legislature can appease extremists in the community at the expense of honest, hard-working, taxpaying citizens? Yes. Thatâs exactly it.
I just heard from a large national business owner re: SB 1062. He told me “many many businesses will never do business in Arizona again” if we don’t stop this bill. Please call 602-542-4331 and ask Governor Brewer to #VETO the bill. #bad4AZbiz
